Models of wave supported clumps in giant molecular clouds
نویسنده
چکیده
We present plane-parallel equilibrium models of molecular clumps that are supported by Alfvén waves damped by the linear process of ion-neutral friction. We used a WKB approximation to treat the inward propagation of waves and adopted a realistic ionization structure influenced by dissociation and ionization due to photons of external origin. The model clumps contain central condensations surrounded by lower density envelopes and are more condensed than those obtained for an assumed ionization structure, used in some previous studies, that is more appropriate for dark regions. In some parameter regimes the structures of clumps depend sensitively on the assumed depletions of Sulphur and metals.

Slow Star Formation in Dense Gas: Evidence and Implications
It has been known for more than 30 years that star formation in giant molecular clouds (GMCs) is slow, in the sense that only ∼ 1% of the gas forms stars every free-fall time. This result is entirely independent of any particular model of molecular cloud lifetime or evolution. Here we survey observational data on higher density objects in the interstellar medium, including infrared dark clouds ...
متن کاملStar Formation in Turbulent Molecular Clouds
Recent progress in the understanding of star formation is summarized. A consistent picture is emerging where molecular clouds form with turbulent velocity fields and clumpy substructure, imprinted already during their formation. The clouds are initially supported by supersonic turbulence which dissipates however within massive clumps on short timescales, of order their local dynamical timescale...
متن کاملAnalysis of Clumps in Molecular Cloud Models: Mass Spectrum, Shapes, Alignment and Rotation
Observations reveal concentrations of molecular line emission on the sky, called “clumps,” in dense, star-forming molecular clouds. These clumps are believed to be the eventual sites of star formation. We study the three-dimensional analogs of clumps using a set of self-consistent, time-dependent numerical models of molecular clouds. The models follow the decay of initially supersonic turbulenc...
متن کاملFormation and loss of hierarchical structure in two-dimensional MHD simulations of wave-driven turbulence in interstellar clouds
Two dimensional compressible magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations run for ∼ 20 crossing times on a 800× 640 grid with two stable thermal states show persistent hierarchical density structures and Kolmogorov turbulent motions in the interaction zone between incoming non-linear Alfvén waves. These structures and motions are similar to what is commonly observed in weakly self-gravitating inter...
متن کاملThedynamical Structure and Evolutionofgiant Molecular Clouds
The interstellar medium ISM of galaxies contains gas that spans a wide range of physical conditions from hot X ray emitting plasma to cold molec ular gas The molecular gas is of particular importance because it is believed to be the site of all the star formation that occurs in galaxies In the Milky Way molecular gas constitutes about half the total mass of gas within the solar circle Much of t...
